Traveler Editor and Chapter Historian Gary Kinst

  • Gary is receiving emails from people interested in doing research regarding the Lincoln Highway in their own cities.
  • Gary would appreciate more input and/or questions about different areas of the Lincoln Highway in California. Some people are interested in general information, some people want to know where every road leads and some want to read about Lincoln Highway experiences. This information would then develop into articles for the Traveler Newsletter.
  • Arcadia book project- There are 85 towns covering over 500 miles of the Lincoln Highway in California. All are to be condensed into 127 pages. Gary will continue to work on putting together one book to present to Arcadia. Gary will have the editing assistance of Joel Windmiller, Neil Rodrigues, Sue Marx and Miriam Hull.

Mike Kaelin

  • Mike thanked Joel for his work on the signage project. Things are finally rolling along in Stockton.
  • Two huge signage projects going on right now. One in Oakland and one in Stockton. Two smaller projects are in Colfax and Hayward.
  • Bob Glaze, President of the Optimist Club in San Leandro, has taken on the job of managing and sponsoring the Oakland project. Mike has gone with Bob to obtain sponsors in Oakland. The Oakland Hotel on 13th street is one place of great interest.
  • A meeting was held in Stockton regarding signage. Kevin Shawver has taken over sponsorship of this project.
  • The head of the Department of Public Works has been extremely cooperative. Signs will be placed on existing poles along the Lincoln Highway. The Public Works Director is also fully backing the signage project.
  • Colfax has a v-shaped billboard alongside the freeway which directs drivers to Historic Colfax and will soon also display Lincoln Highway signs. This will alert drivers to go into Colfax and drive the historic Lincoln Highway through historic Colfax.

Ophir Monument

The original architectural drawing shows a place for a 1928 replica Lincoln Highway marker to the left of the monument. When the monument was built the PCWA placed a metal post with a Lincoln Highway sign on the left side of the monument. Paul has been working with Rick Lund from PCWA regarding placement of a marker. The Lincoln Highway Association voted and agreed to build a new marker to be placed next to the monument. The existing metal pole and LH sign will be placed elsewhere on the route. Building a new marker will require at least four volunteers.
